About the Dances

Bring Your Gifts is not intended to be an accurate portrayal of the dances in Israel at the time of Christ’s birth. Rather, the show features dances from all over the world to portray the familiar characters and events of the Nativity story. Because some of these dances may be unfamiliar to people, we’d like to share some information about them.

Raqs Sharki
Raqs Sharki is Arabic for Dance of the East. Commonly called bellydance in the U.S., Raqs Sharki is a classical, flowing and beautiful dance form originating in the countries of the Middle East, especially Egypt and Lebanon. The movements were based off of folk dances from those regions. It is danced in Egypt by both women and men. The dance has become very popular in the United States and other countries, and various fusion forms have developed. Bring Your Gifts features classical Raqs Sharki performances as well as more fusion based pieces.
